On Hawaiian Time
Things were running smoothly the first day of the Pipeline Masters, until about 10am. Heat 8 was approaching: Sunny Garcia & Nic Muscroft, But Sunny was nowhere to be seen, they kept calling and calling for him, but still nothing. Torrey Meister was the first alternate, he was stoked. He grabbed a jersey and hit the water joining Nic Muscroft. Minutes later, who shows up? thats right, Sunny Garcia. Late on the scene, Sunny ran down to get his jersey, but Randy Rarick wasn't gonna allow this, he was late for his heat, he knew the rules. A small tug-o-war started up on the sand. End result: Sunny was not able to surf. Kauai’s Evan Valiere offered to give up his next alternate spot, so Sunny would still have a chance to get in, but no other surfers withdrew from Round 1. It's too bad, Sunny was in position to win the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, and everyone would have loved to watch him surf Pipe.

Very Sad... Being in #2 spot, with Sunny making such an awesome comeback, making the contest really interesting, and poised to win, they should have made an exception and let Sunny ride! Organizers need to have a little more respect in this type of situation...
I am bummed that Sunny didn't surf. I was looking forward to watching him surf towards another Triple Crown title. I was stoked he was surfing so well. He charges with fierce power and competiveness. Other than a family emergency there is no excuse for being late. I hope all is well with the family Sunny.
Complete F-UP from a surfing/marketing point of view. But, pretty typical of the industry...they don't get it: show us what WE want to see.
How many run ins with the asp has this guy has this guy had? What a goon. You guys won't post this because you wanna be on the "I suck Sunnys arse surf team" like the rest of neandathols.
I wonder if the rules would be the same, if it wasn´t Sunny, but some other surfer?, even if we was in contention for the TC?
Do you think that once the rules are bend over, what credit remains, for all the asp establishment?, don´t you thing, that this kind of "tap in the shoulder", is a terible precedent for future issues?.
Guys!, Event rules are so important as judjment rules...
Man, the guy was late...they announced his name multiple times...he's got buddies there that probably called him. He had no excuse. It's called living in the real world...where the world doesn't revolve around you. It's a good lesson...maybe next time he won't be late. Either that, or he'll pout and just quit competing.
he isnt a nice guy(huge understatement) why does any one care? im glad!
Sounds like he was hitting the "ice" pipe again....what a loser! Welcome to the real world goon!!!
How come Adriano de Souza was late and got to surf??
Double standard here?? You can talk all the trash you want about Sunny, (I would love to see anyone here say it to his face) but to shut him down of competition? Could it be that he could have shut Fanning on the 2nd heat of the 3rd round.. Could it be personal?
ASP is much bigger than peronal vendettas against a certain or any surfer.
What if it was Fanning,Parko or even Slater the ones late?? Well I guess that question is answered by De Souza...
What a shame..
Sunny was robbed
Yeah, there shouldn't be any double standards...but what happened to Sunny should and hopefully does happen to anyone. And I think that Sunny showed up after his heat had already paddled out...that's a little different than just being 10 seconds late.
Anyway...Sunny is Sunny and he's gained a reputation for himself...it's sad that people are bashing him, but it's kind of the bed that he's made for himself to sleep in.
Sorry, but Novak says in his video of the heat, he was there, surfing by himself for 7 minutes..Before De Souza came in.
Actually, he says he thought he was gonna get Sunny
I think you should've made an exception in this situation. This contest is being held on their turf, the locals are letting the contest go on, so they should've let Sunny surf. The whole world doesn't come to you're local break during the best time of the year for waves.
Now, from a marketing point of view, they screwed up. Surfers watch the Pipe Masters or follow the ASP because they simply like surfing, but there's a mass of people that live to see who won, who's battle is being fought, if Slater is gona be champ for the umpteen time, everyone has a reason, little stories within a plot, that make people watch and follow and event or series. You had the Parko/Fanning, the John John and yes, the Sunny Garcia, coming from retirement, Sunset, Eddie, and now pipe..
Having the chance to win a 7th Triple Crown, local Hawaiian who has been on the dumps and on the best of times.. A better scenario could not have been scripted, and Randy Rarick or the powers to be at Pipe and ASP, blew it, mega blew it.
Well, on the other hand people can have an opinion about Sunny and what he deserves or not, everyone screws up, some more than others, How many "celebrities" screw up badly and get a slap on the hand... Or are completely aquitted..Paris Hilton walked away from a couple days at jail wearing Prada and a stinky chihuahua..people ate that shit up.
Sunny did time for his stuff.. He might be a bully in some peoples eyes. How many places in California are ten times worse than Hawai'i in localism?? Cars trashed, tires slashed, punches and beatings.. yes, Cali's beaches.
So what if you get every haole in the world in your back yard, sneaking and snaking, being disrespectful, trashing your home.. the question is What would you do? Da' Hui, Wolfpack, Pipeline Posse, etc, etc, exist for a reason, not for a bunch of thugs who enjoy beating people up for no reason whatsoever..
Simply, for reasons unknown, personal or not, Sunny Garcia was not able to surf, nor compete by a biased decision from the powers to be.
Too bad 'cause it would have been a hell of a contest for sure..
The ASP has no crediblity. Many surfers have been late for their heats and be allowed to surf. Including De Souza.
