JOEL PARKINSON WINS FINAL STOP OF 2009 NIXON WTA

Joel Parkinson walked away the winner of the final stop of the 2009 Nixon Winner-Takes-All (WTA) during the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Parkinson secured his WTA victory as the overall Vans Triple Crown champion at the Billabong Pipeline Masters on Oahu’s North Shore. 2009 marks the second year in a row that Parkinson claimed the WTA Triple Crown title making him the proud new owner of a custom Nixon watch valued at over $10,000 USD.

As the 2008 Triple Crown Winner, Parkinson showed that he was the man to beat on the North Shore this year; but he was unstoppable and showed great knowledge of some of the most challenging waves during the Triple Crown events.

Burrow Wins Billabong Pipe Masters, Parkinson Claims Vans Triple Crown

Taj Burrow (AUS), 31, has claimed the 2009 Billabong Pipe Masters, defeating fellow Finalist Kelly Slater (USA), 37, in clean three-to-five foot (1 – 1.5 metre) waves at the Banzai Pipeline.

The final event of the 2009 ASP World Tour season, the Billabong Pipe Masters culminated the Vans Triple Crown (an ASP Specialty Series), and provided non-stop, high-caliber action from the outset.

Burrow wasted little time in putting Slater on the ropes in the 35-minute Final, racking up a 7.00 out of a possible 10 on his opening ride for an electric air reverse followed by some solid forehand maneuvers. With deteriorating conditions, Burrow stayed busy before collecting a 5.83 for an incredible full-rotation alley-oop, putting the pressure on Slater as time ran out.

“There were perfect backdoor waves this whole event and then for the Final it went onshore,” Burrow said. “It was strictly turns. It was all about turns and hopefully doing a few airs and I dropped down to my shortboard and my plan was to just to let loose. It was tough because I knew Kelly (Slater) could do anything. Even when there was 20 seconds to go and I had priority, I was still scared. I just had nothing to lose and tried to let loose.”

Today’s victory mark’s Burrow’s first ASP World Tour win since 2007 and his first-ever win at the infamous Banzai Pipeline.

“This win feels about as good as you could imagine,” Burrow said. “For me, winning this contest is the next best thing to winning a World Title. This is the one and only event that everyone would probably pick to win and I can’t believe I’m standing here right now. It’s an amazing feeling. There are so many tough guys that you go up against in this event that I thought it was out of my reach. This is the best victory of my career.”
Burrow, who has long been considered a legitimate ASP World Title contender, is thrilled with his finish to the 2009 season looks forward to 2010 with renewed vigor and hunger to hunt down the ever-elusive ASP crown.

“This win is an excellent springboard into next season,” Burrow said. “There is nothing but confidence to take from this and I’m excited for the Gold Coast. It comes around really fast. It feels like we’re on holiday now, but the Gold Coast sneaks up on us pretty quick and I’m excited for it. Hopefully I can win some more events, but this is the number one that I’ve ever dreamed of winning.”

Slater looked near unbeatable throughout the Billabong Pipe Masters, deftly maneuvering his 5’11” craft through one incredible tube after another before running into Burrow in the Finals. While his opponent stayed busy throughout the bout, Slater waited patiently for scoring opportunities that never manifested.

“Unfortunately the Final had the absolute worst conditions of the contest, but there are still fun waves out there,” Slater said. “You could go out for a free surf and have a good time. It’s difficult to transition when you’re already expecting one thing. I had already had a couple of heats with barrels and then all of a sudden it’s completely different conditions. Still, there’s a shallow reef there, so you’re expecting one to throw out and barrel, but it just didn’t happen.”

The former nine-time ASP World Champion was in the hunt for an unprecedented seventh Pipe Masters title, but the conditions didn’t cooperate for the Floridian, despite finding the only barrel of the Final, scoring a 3.93 out of a possible 10.

“I thought the wave would be more than a three,” Slater said. “I still needed two waves, basically. There really weren’t any nine-point rides out there and had that been only a six I would have needed a seven. I thought the judges put me in a weird situation there, and in the end, nothing else came. Well, that’s not entirely true. I caught that last wave and did an off-the-top and Taj (Burrow) took off on it and just kicked off the side. He almost stood up too late and could have got an interference. Had he done that he would have only been judged on one wave. Had I landed that air reverse I could have gotten a score, but it was a long shot.”

In terms of returning in 2010 for an unprecedented 10th ASP World Title, Slater is characteristically guarded.

“I don’t know if I’m going to do the tour full-time next year,” Slater said. “I’m sort of feeling it out. I’ve just competed for so many years, doing the same thing and going to the same places, it’s a little monotonous. When you find some meaning in it and it’s bigger than just going and surfing, then it becomes more exciting, but, unfortunately, this year I had a pretty lackluster year in a lot of ways, both personally and competitively and it probably showed in my surfing.”

Dean Morrison (AUS), 28, secured his best result of the season today, finishing Equal 3rd at the Billabong Pipe Masters to cement himself at No. 16th on the year-end ratings. Besting Damien Hobgood (USA), 30, in a tight Quarterfinal before falling to Slater in the Semifinals, Morrison put himself into excellent position heading into the 2010 ASP World Tour season.

“There’s a lot of hassling going on out there, but that’s the way it goes when it’s such a tight peak,” Morrison said. “I spend a lot of time out here at Pipeline though, so it’s nice to have made it through to the Semifinals.”

Dane Reynolds (USA), 24, continued his impressive run through the back half of the 2009 ASP World Tour season, finishing Equal 3rd today at the Billabong Pipe Masters and cracking the Top 10 in the year-end ASP ratings. Although quickly dispatching of compatriot C.J. Hobgood (USA), 30, in the Quarterfinals, Reynolds was unable to negotiate the deteriorating conditions in his Semifinal bout against event winner Burrow.

“I was kind of stuck between trying to find air sections and still trying to find one of those rare tubes and ended up not doing either,” Reynolds said. “I just got stuck in the middle. I’m stoked though. It was a good way to end the year and it’s been a good event.”

Joel Parkinson (AUS), 28, was in the running for the 2009 ASP World Title before bowing out of the Billabong Pipe Masters in Round 3 of competition. Although Gold Coast stable mate Mick Fanning (AUS), 28, claimed the 2009 ASP World Title, Parkinson’s efforts throughout the Vans Triple Crown (an ASP Specialty Series) saw the talented natural-footer awarded with his second consecutive Vans Triple Crown Title as well as a bonus $50,000 from the Vans Triple Threat prize pool.

“This is my consolation prize to this year’s ASP World Title,” Parkinson said. “To me, the Triple Crown is the next best thing to the World Title. Last year I wanted to win the Vans Triple Crown and this year I wanted to win the ASP World Title, but I won the Triple Crown and I’m over the moon with what happened this year. I should be proud of everything I’ve done and I can’t wait for next year and I’ll be back strong for another Triple Crown and all that and I just want to thank Vans for stepping it up to a new level for putting out huge incentives for us.”

Pipe Masters Wraps Up Tomorrow

The final eight surfers will hit the water early tomorrow, with the Pipe Masters champion to be crowned around midday Hawaii time. Prior to the final, former Pipe Masters champions Gerry Lopez, Derek Ho, Rob Machado, and Bruce and Andy Irons will put on a nostalgic surfing exhibition at the venerated surf venue. PIPELINE, Oahu/Hawaii (Saturday, December 12, 2009) - In a convoluted moment of both celebration and commiseration, Australia's Mick Fanning, 28, has clinched his second 2009 ASP World Title on Oahu's North Shore. It all took place during the Billabong Pipe Masters - the final stop of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing presented by Rockstar Energy Drink - when Fanning found himself in the lineup with his two childhood mates: Joel Parkinson and Dean Morrison.

The same horn that signaled the start of Fanning's fourth round opening heat clash against Morrison, signaled the end of Joel's run in the Billabong Pipe Masters and the end of his world title campaign, eliminated in the last heat of the third round by Gavin Gillette (Hawaii). With Parkinson's loss, Fanning was unbeatable on the ASP Dream Tour rankings. Forty minutes later, Morrison had eliminated him from the competition.

In recognition of his accomplishment, the Vans Triple Crown awarded Mick a $50,000 world champion's bonus - part one of the Vans Triple Threat that will also award $50,000 on the final day of competition to the Billabong Pipe Masters champion, and a further $50,000 to the Vans Triple Crown series champion.

"First I'd like to thank Vans," said Fanning. "I really appreciate how they stepped it up for the Triple Crown. It's awesome to see companies believing in surfing. It's just a picture of what's going to happen in years to come.

"I'm at a loss for words. It's been such a crazy year and I had so much fun. I'm just shaking and lost for words."

"If I wasn't in the race, I would have been gunning for Joel (Parkinson), for sure. He just had that bad ankle injury and surfed so good all year."

The 2009 ASP World Tour season will go down in history as one of the most dramatic, with Parkinson winning three of the first five events before Fanning rallied in the latter half of the season to overtake his good friend.

"I knew I was surfing well," Fanning said. "It was just a matter of getting that result. I knew it was going to turn around sooner or later. I don't know, it's weird the way the world works."

Heading into the quarter finals the lineup consists of three Floridians - Kelly Slater and brothers CJ and Damien Hobgood; Australians Dean Morrison, Bede Durbidge and Taj Burrow; California's Dane Reynolds; and lone local Hawaii surfer Flynn Novak. Slater has won six Pipe Masters titles during his career, and Durbidge has won one.

CJ Hobgood is now the only surfer who can get between defending Vans Triple Crown champion Parkinson and a second series title that is this year worth a bonus $50,000 and a $10,000 custom Nixon watch. With Parkinson out of the competition, CJ must make it all the way to the final, where a first or second place would be sufficient to wrap it up.

In conjunction with Billabong's $40,000 winner's purse, Vans has added a bonus $50,000 to bring the first place check to $90,000.

The final day of competition will be aired live on FUEL TV across the USA as well as Australia and Portugal. This will be the first-ever live broadcast of an ASP World Tour event in the United States.

Meister Ready To Take It All

PIPELINE, Oahu/Hawaii (Friday, December 11, 2009) - The Billabong Pipe Masters is about to ignite and all eyes will be on the actions of three surfers. Two of them have been the talk of town for weeks - Joel Parkinson and Mick Fanning, who are the contenders for the ASP World Title, and one who is a complete dark horse whose performance will determine the success of the other two: Torrey Meister (Hawaii). Meister, a 21-year-old who has a ranking of 48th on the final 2009 ASP Qualifying Series, has unexpectedly become the linchpin of the Vans Triple Crown "Triple Threat", presented by Rockstar Energy Drink.

Meister got his start yesterday after six-time Vans Triple Crown champion Sunny Garcia (Hawaii) arrived too late for his first round heat and subsequently lost his spot. Meister went on to blow doors against Australian seed Nic Muscroft with what would be the second highest scoring heat of the round - 14.83 out of 20. In round two today, he claimed the scalp of world No.16 ranked Kai Otton (Australia), methodically closing the door on his season.

Shoot ahead to the upcoming third round that is highly likely to hit the waves tomorrow morning, and Meister will be Parko's best mate - for the moment - charged with the task of a dark horse trample of current world number one Fanning. The pair will go head-to-head in heat two. Surfline.com forecasts waves to be in the 10- to 15-foot face range tomorrow.

BUT, should Meister pull off the incredible and eliminate Fanning, he then becomes a threat to Parkinson's hope of sealing the $50,000 Vans Triple Crown series win, breathing down his neck and definitely within shot of the win.

"I'm definitely the dark horse," said Meister. "I don't really have much pressure and they've got the world title race.

"Winning the Triple Crown would mean the world to me. I don't have much to lose. I feel comfortable at Pipe and way more comfortable surfing here than anywhere else in the world. Either way it goes, Mick is one of my favorite surfers. If I beat him it would be amazing. If I don't, I lost to someone amazing and who deserves whatever he gets.

"It's always in the back of my mind," said Meister of the Vans Triple Crown $50,000 bonus. "I've got a long way to go but it would be sick if it happens. I'd be psyched!"

Parkinson and Fanning are making their way towards the crown and the world title on opposite sides of the draw. Fanning's top half is top-loaded with Andy Irons (Hawaii) and Kelly Slater (Florida), who between them account for 10 Pipe Masters titles and six Triple Crowns. Down below, Parkinson's side of the draw has just two Pipe Masters title owners in Bruce Irons (Hawaii) and Bede Durbidge (Australia). Parkinson has to win his third round heat to keep his world title hopes alive.

With $90,000 on the table for the Billabong Pipe champion, another $50,000 on offer to the Vans Triple Crown champion, and an added $50,000 purse for the world champion, the pressure is on.

Just half a day of competition was held today, making use of the tail of a record week of waves that were still clean and perfectly barreling at around 6-8 feet. Heats nine through 16 were held and Vans rider John John Florence (Hawaii) and Dean Morrison (Australia) ruled the day. Both of them are headed into Fanning's side of the draw tomorrow.

Florence, 17, has lived and breathed Pipeline from birth, going to school directly across the street from the contest site at Sunset Beach Elementary school, and first hitting the waves here when he was still in single digits.

Florence continued his run of fine form in the Backdoor barrel rides, posting the second highest heat score of the event in round two. The natural-footed super talent showed little regard to Brazilian competitor Heitor Alves by locking in a 9.43 and a 9.47 in the 40-minute-heat. Florence also posted the third highest heat score of 17.20 in round one yesterday.

"Conditions were perfect today and the waves dropped just a little bit, but it was still really fun," said Florence. "I think if it was little bit bigger it could be really perfect Pipe.

"I think I have an advantage because I know all the little peaks, boils and all the different cracks in the reef."

Morrison, 28, is one of the original "Cooly Kids" - a trio of youngsters from the Queensland Gold Coast town of Coolangatta that pushed each other from knee-high days to the top. Who were the other two? Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson. Don't overlook the potential for damage from Morrison. Two years ago Morrison reached the final here, placing second to Durbidge.

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 6:30am to assess conditions for a possible 8am start.

On Hawaiian Time

Things were running smoothly the first day of the Pipeline Masters, until about 10am. Heat 8 was approaching: Sunny Garcia & Nic Muscroft, But Sunny was nowhere to be seen, they kept calling and calling for him, but still nothing. Torrey Meister was the first alternate, he was stoked. He grabbed a jersey and hit the water joining Nic Muscroft. Minutes later, who shows up? thats right, Sunny Garcia. Late on the scene, Sunny ran down to get his jersey, but Randy Rarick wasn't gonna allow this, he was late for his heat, he knew the rules. A small tug-o-war started up on the sand. End result: Sunny was not able to surf. Kauai’s Evan Valiere offered to give up his next alternate spot, so Sunny would still have a chance to get in, but no other surfers withdrew from Round 1. It's too bad, Sunny was in position to win the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, and everyone would have loved to watch him surf Pipe.

Hawaiians Dominate Day 2 of Billabong Pipe Masters

Competitors reveled in the gently groomed four-to-six foot (1.5 – 2 metre) barrels of the Banzai Pipeline today as the remaining nine Round 2 heats of the Billabong Pipe Masters were completed before competition was called off for the day.

Event No. 10 of 10 on the 2009 ASP World Tour, the Billabong Pipeline Masters marks the third and final stop of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing presented by Rockstar energy drink and the Hawaiians ruled the day’s proceedings, taking six wins in nine heats.

John John Florence (HAW), 16, wildcard and youngest the competitor in the Billabong Pipe Masters, was dominant once again today, effortlessly threading both the Backdoor rights and the Pipeline lefts with pancahe and aplomb to net the day’s highest heat total, an 18.90 out of a possible 20, to eliminate ASP World No. 27, Heitor Alves (BRA), 27.

“I’m just going crazy out there with only three people out,” Florence said. “There are so many fun waves and I was just trying to catch as many as I could while I had the chance. It’s good to know the lineup out here when it’s smaller because a lot of times they run along the reef faster and those right barrels get really small and can be tough to make it out of.”

Florence will take on Bobby Martinez (USA), 27, in Round 3 when the Billabong Pipe Masters resumes.

Andy Irons (HAW), 31, former three-time ASP World Champion and former four-time Pipe Masters Champion, continued his blitzkrieg on the competitive field this afternoon, navigating his way through several Backdoor pits to dispatch Drew Courtney (AUS), 30, in the final heat of the day.

“I’m having a lot of fun in the event,” Irons said. “The waves have been really good the past two days and they look like they’re going to be getting really good tomorrow. I’m really enjoying putting the jersey on again and am excited to get a result here before I start back full-time in 2010.”

Irons faces Damien Hobgood (USA), 30, in the upcoming Round 3 when the Billabong Pipe Masters resumes.

Chris Ward (USA), 31, current ASP World No. 37 and last year’s event Runner-Up, is in need of a solid result to vault himself into the qualification cutoff for the 2010 ASP Dream Tour, but if today’s inspired approach in the lethal Backdoor barrels was any indication, the combustible Californian knows what it takes to win at the Pipeline.

“It’s going to take good barrel riding and charging because the waves are going to get good here over the next couple of days and I’m really looking forward to it,” Ward said. “I’m looking forward to some big barrels. Finishing runner-up to Kelly (Slater) last year was pretty rad. I would have loved to win the Pipe Masters and the Triple Crown, but this year’s a new year and I’d love to win the Pipe Masters.”

Ward will battle Fredrick Patacchia (HAW), 27, in Round 3 of the Billabong Pipe Masters.

Dean Morrison (AUS), 28, current ASP World No. 17, put in a juggernaut performance in the early proceedings today, showing an uncanny rapport with the Backdoor righthanders.

“Backdoor is one of my favorite waves,” Morrison said. “I look forward to it all year and I spend another six weeks here just to try and get my barrels. I love it. Spending time here, for myself, it makes me a little more comfortable out there and it’s nice when you’re competing – it’s nice to know a break.”

Surfline, official forecasters for the Billabong Pipe Masters, are calling for a prime 10-to-12 foot (3-4 metre) swell to build for tomorrow.

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 6:30am to assess conditions for a possible 8am start.

When competition resumes, up first will be current ASP World No. 27, Adrian Buchan (AUS), 27, up against fellow ASP Dream Tour competitor Dean Morrison (AUS), 28, in Heat 1 of Round 3.

Round 1 of the third jewel in the Vans Triple Crown - the Billabong Pipeline Masters - completed today in 6-10 ft surf at the Banzai Pipeline.

Michael Picon (FRA), 30, current ASP World No. 39, is in need of an impressive result in the final event of the year to secure his position amongst the world’s elite in 2010. Today, the Frenchman put the rest of the draw on notice, first eliminating wildcard Manoa Drollet (PYF) before posting the highest heat total of the event, a 19.76 out of a possible 20, for a brilliant backhand tube-riding approach to take out Josh Kerr (AUS), 25, in the final heat of the day.

“That was the best heat of my life,” Picon said. “I was just trying to build momentum and I feel like all of the training I’ve done is paying off. It’s great to have this heat at Pipeline and in Hawaii. Today was all about the rights. We all knew that. I was going for the right too. I figured I’d go for the death, whatever.”

To vault himself ahead the current qualification cutoff point, Picon will have to finish third or better at the Billabong Pipeline Masters, but the calculated Frenchman remains calm heading into the remainder of the event.

“I’m trying not to think about it,” Picon said. “I’m just thinking about having a good heat and having a good contest here because it’s always been a dream for me to do well at Pipeline. I’m just really confident after that heat.”

John John Florence (HAW), 16, the Billabong Pipeline Masters’ youngest competitor, was a tour du force in his Round 1 heat, posting an impressive 17.20 out of a possible 20, to defeat fellow Hawaiian wildcard Danny Fuller (HAW), 27.

“With four guys out at Pipe I was going crazy and just trying to get every wave I could,” Florence said. “Yesterday was big and messy and today’s conditions have really cleaned up. This morning was fun, but this afternoon’s wind has made it really good. Growing up here, I really looked up to all the local guys for inspiration and advice out here. To be competing in the Pipe Masters is an honor and I hope I have the opportunity to surf through a few more rounds.”

Florence will take on current ASP World No. 27, Heitor Alves (BRA), 27, in Heat 12 of Round 2 when competition resumes.

Andy Irons (HAW), 31, former three-time ASP World Champion and former four-time Pipe Master Champion, showed a return to form today recovering from an early heat double-interference collision with opponent Marcus Hickman (HAW), 30, and rallying with a dominant performance in the Backdoor righthanders. Although on sabbatical from full-time competition this season, Irons’ return to the ASP World Tour in 2010 has been highly-anticipated by the surfing world.

“I’ve decided to be on the world tour next year and just being in a jersey is a good warm-up for it,” Irons said. “I definitely feel like I’m in a better position going into next season after taking this year off.”

Irons will take on current ASP World No. 25, Drew Courtney (AUS), 30, in Heat 16 of Round 2 when the Billabong Pipeline Masters recommences.

Andy wasn’t the only Irons to make a dent in today’s competition as younger brother and former ASP World Tour campaigner, Bruce Irons (HAW), 30, took down lethal Californian Tim Reyes (USA), 27, in Round 2 of competition.

Torrey Meister (HAW), 21, wildcard into the Billabong Pipeline Masters, was the first alternate called to action when Sunny Garcia (HAW), 39, failed to show for his Round 1 heat. Despite arriving late to the lineup, Meister put in an inspired performance in both the Backdoor rights and the Pipeline lefts to net a 16.83 out of a possible 20 to overtake Nic Muscroft (AUS), 27.

“I don’t know what happened,” Meister said. “I expected Sunny (Garcia) to turn up and I was sitting on the beach getting tired watching the waves. It was firing and I couldn’t get too antsy because I didn’t know if I was going to get into the event, but I’m happy that I did. I guess it’s kind of an advantage to get in this way, because I didn’t have time to get nervous before my heat.”

Meister will face current ASP World No. 16, Kai Otton (AUS), 29, in the first heat when competition resumes.

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 6:30am to assess conditions for a possible 8am start.

Gilmore Wins Billabong Pro and Vans Triple Crown Women's Titles

Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 21, took out the final stop on the 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour today, the Billabong Pro Maui, in clean four-to-six foot (1.5 metre) conditions at the iconic pointbreak of Honolua Bay over Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 26, clinching her third consecutive Billabong Pro Maui title after three years of competition at the premier event. Gilmore wrapped up her dominating season amongst the Top 17 by claiming her second consecutive Vans Triple Crown title today as well.

Gilmore capped the year off in appropriate form after claiming her third ASP Women’s World Title at the Gidget Pro Sunset Beach, when she advanced over Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 18, in the Semifinals, en route to defending her flawless record at the Billabong Pro Maui while claiming the prized Hawaiian specialty series and the beefed up $25,000 prize purse supplied by Vans.

“Once again, Maui has just been incredible and to win this event three times in a row is just awesome,” Gilmore said. “I couldn’t have been happier with the way things have gone today. Winning the Vans Triple Crown is definitely up there with winning the World Title and it’s definitely one of the biggest accolades of surfing professionally. I can’t believe it’s all happening again, it’s awesome.”

Gilmore absolutely dominated the day’s proceedings, blitzing the highest heat total of the entire 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour season by surfing a near-perfect heat of 19.67 out of 20 to usurp Samantha Cornish (AUS), 29, in her Quarterfinals heat before topping Fitzgibbons and Mulanovich en route to her second ASP Women’s World Tour win of 2009.

“I guess it’s a little surprising,” Gilmore said. “I would have thought that the highest heat total would have gone down yesterday with all of the barrels. Today there are still some rippable waves out there, but I don’t know. I just went surfing.”

Mulanovich campaigned through a lengthy day of competition, topping Jessi Miley-Dyer (AUS), 23, Australian veteran Rebecca Woods (AUS), 25, and ASP Women’s World No. 2 Silvana Lima (BRA), 25, but was unable to top Gilmore for the victory and claimed a runner-up finish at the final event of the year to finish her season ASP Women’s World No. 3.

“It’s been a great day,” Mulanovich said. “Congratulations to Steph (Gilmore). She’s a champ and a hero to all of us and thanks to the sponsors of the event and my family and friends. It’s been a great event.”

Fitzgibbons navigated the Honolua Bay lineup with poise and maturity beyond her years and posted some amazing scores before falling in her Semifinals bout against Gilmore, but clinched an impressive heat victory over Coco Ho (HAW), 18, in the Quarterfinals on the way to her third place finish.

“I always love surfing heats with Coco (Ho),” Fitzgibbons said. “She always pushes my level up and I usually have my best heats with her. She’s also a really great friend. I wish there were more waves so we could have dueled a little bit more. She surfed amazing this year and my hat goes off to her.”

Lima, who smashed one of two perfect 10-point rides during the Billabong Pro Maui with amazing barrel riding in yesterday’s action, was in stellar form for the final day of competition, but was overtaken by former Peruvian ASP Women’s World Champion, Mulanovich, in the dying minutes of their Semifinals heat, taking a third place finish to wrap up her year while finishing ASP Women’s World No. 2 for 2009.

“The waves were a lot smaller than yesterday, but it was still good,” Lima said. “Sometimes the heats were slow, but the conditions were still great.”

Lay Day for Billabong Pipe Masters, Possible Start Tomorrow

With lumpy 10-to-15 foot (4 – 5 metre) surf breaking irregularly across the seven mile miracle this morning, event organizers have decided to call a lay day for the Billabong Pipeline Masters.

Event No. 10 of 10 on the 2009 ASP World Tour, the Billabong Pipeline Masters also marks the third and final jewel in the prestigious Vans Triple Crown of Surfing (an ASP Specialty Series), and will look to get underway in improving conditions over the next several days.

“The swell is still too big for Pipeline today so we’ve called the event off,” Randy Rarick, Vans Triple Crown of Surfing Contest Director, said. “We’re expecting conditions to drop slightly and clean up so it’s looking likely that we’ll begin tomorrow.”

Pipeline holds no shortage of drama this season as the two-man race for the 2009 ASP World Title will culminate before the event finishes as the dreams of several would-be qualifiers for the 2010 ASP Dream Tour will be decided over its hallowed reefs.

Surfline, official forecasters for the Billabong Pipeline Masters, are calling for today’s fetch of swell to slowly decline over the next several days meaning there will be plenty of surf on offer to kickstart the final event of the 2009 ASP World Tour season.

Greg Long Wins the 2009 Eddie Aikau!

San Clemente's Greg Long, who has made a name for himself in the big wave department added another huge accomplishment by winning the 2009 Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau Contest. Massive waves poured into Waimea Bay today exceeding 40 feet, it was at its prime, and all the competitors were frothing.

Kelly Slater jumped ahead early with a 98 point scoring wave, and continued grabbing high scoring rides. It wasn’t till the last two heats, when the only contender left in the game was Bruce Irons. He was in position to take the lead in his last heat. But in the very last heat, Greg Long shocked everyone by winning the event with each of the waves he caught, including a perfect 100 point wave. Long is a regular standout in the yearlong Billabong XXL Big-Wave Awards, so its no surprise that he would take the Eddie at the last minute. Ramon Navarro was another contender picking up a 100 point wave, winning the Monster Energy Drop Award, he was happy to return home to Chile with a check for $10,000. It couldn’t have been a better day to run the contest, with the recent success of the Gudauskas brothers and now this, I’m sure San Clemente will raging tonight.

This is a big week for the surf on the North Shore of Oahu. We’ve started to see the first part of a massive two-day swell generated by Typhoon Nida in the Western Pacific followed by more swell, and then more. It’s been forecasted that the waves this week will be the largest surf to hit the seven mile miracle in 40 years. When the waves get this giant, its both good and bad for the people of Hawaii, bringing epic surf for all those who desire to ride the waves, and at the same time causing destruction on homes and closing main highways, inconveniencing all Hawaiian residents as well as visitors. Wave heights were already well above warning levels of 20 feet in recent days as surfers rode 25-to-30 foot face swells at the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing. It was some of the largest surf to be seen since the start of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. These swells coming in are so large they practically wrap around the island creating massive surf everywhere. Hundreds of people line up on Kam Highway and on the sand to watch the big wave riders at Waimea Bay, and everyone is excited for the Eddie Aikau competition to get underway.

The contest is named after the legendary North Shore lifeguard and surfer who lost his life in 1978 trying to paddle a surfboard from the disabled traditional Hawaiian double-hulled canoe Hokule'a in the Molokai Channel to distant Lanai to get help, the crew was rescued by the Coast Guard, but Aikau was never found. The motto "Eddie would go" has become synonymous with taking chances, especially in aid of others. The event has to have surf over 25 feet to be held and has only gone off seven times in 25 years. Crowds coming up from Honolulu are expected to gridlock the North Shore roads, as they did during the last contest in December 2004. Wave heights are expected to be at or above the legendary 1998 contest, which featured sets above 30 feet.

And lets not for get about the Billabong Pipeline Masters, with the current swells prepping the sand, Pipe should be in good shape by the time the contests kicks off. It’s gonna be an Aussie showdown, with Mick and Parko battling it out for the 2009 ASP World Title. Parko showed he has recovered since his ankle injury by taking home the gold at the O’Neill World Cup, but Fanning has won three of the last four events. ASP WORLD CROWN SHOWDOWN @ BILLABONG PIPELINE MASTERS

After nine events on the 2009 ASP Dream Tour, the race for the ASP World Title will culminate in a showdown between two lifelong friends at the final event of the season, the Billabong Pipeline Masters from December 8 – 20, 2009. Mick Fanning (AUS), 28, former ASP World Champion (2007) and current ASP World No. 1, will face Gold Coast stable mate and current ASP World No. 2, Joel Parkinson (AUS), 28, in the hunt for the 2009 ASP World Title as the two battle a minefield of the world’s best surfers and Pipe specialists at the Billabong Pipeline Masters.

“It’s been a few years since the ASP Title has come down to Pipe and I’m really stoked that it’s between myself and Joel (Parkinson),” Fanning said. “I guess it’s like a dream come true coming down to Pipeline and I’m really excited. There isn’t going to be any sand on the reef and hopefully we get a couple of really good days.”

Although Parkinson mounted an impressive assault throughout the first half of the year, an ankle injury sustained while training in Bali saw the Australian’s lead dwindle before being overtaken by Fanning, who has won three of the last four events.

“I’ve built up momentum throughout the back half of the year starting at Trestles, and I’m in the lead,” Fanning said. “I guess all of the pressure is on Joel now because he needs to get a third. I’m just concentrating on myself and am going to try and make as many heats as possible and make it as hard as possible for him.”

If Fanning’s incendiary performances this season are any indication, the lightning-fast natural-footer will be a force to be reckoned with heading into the final event, but Pipeline’s elusive and at-times dangerous nature will ultimately decide the victor.

“I guess surfing Pipeline is like meeting a really big guy in a dark alley and sometimes you escape and sometimes you can’t,” Fanning said. “It’s intimidating. Everyone’s on the beach watching and you’ve got to go.”

Although Fanning possesses a solid ratings’ lead, Parkinson remains collected heading into the final bout of the year, and will draw upon his preternatural affinity with the wave at Pipeline to put forth his best effort.

“It’s definitely exciting to see the ASP title come down to Pipe,” Parkinson said. “Mick (Fanning) was in form all throughout Sunset and I feel like I’m in form as well and it’s going to be a great match-up. Pipeline is one of the most awesome waves ever. It’s close to the beach. It’s a natural amphitheatre and it’s only 50 yards out and you’re surfing a wave that could kill you, so it’s pretty exciting.”

In addition to hunting down his inaugural ASP World Title, Parkinson is also out to defend his Vans Triple Crown Title – a feat made easier with an emphatic win at Sunset Beach yesterday.

“I’m excited to defend my Vans Triple Crown title,” Parkinson said. “After losing Haleiwa in the Quarterfinals, I thought I’d have to win Sunset and my focus wasn’t 100 percent on the Triple Crown anymore, it was more on Pipe, but now that I’ve won Sunset I’d love to win the Vans Triple Crown again.”

The scenarios for the 2009 ASP World Title heading into the Billabong Pipeline Masters are as follows:

- Fanning finishes 33rd through a 9th at Pipeline, Parkinson needs a 3rd or better to overtake.

- Fanning finishes 5th at Pipeline, Parkinson needs a 2nd or better to overtake.

- Fanning finishes 3rd at Pipeline, Parkinson needs win the event to overtake.

- If Fanning finishes 2nd or better at Pipeline, he will clinch the 2009 ASP World Title.

Surfline, official forecasters for the Vans Triple Crown, are projecting for the current fetch of 20-25 foot surf to build through tomorrow before declining over the next several days.

Event organizers will convene tomorrow at 6:30am to assess conditions for a possible 8am start.

HIGH SURF WARNING FOR NORTH SHORE (12/7)

The National Weather Service is issuing high surf warnings to local residents. In the interest of public safety, the Civil Defense may close beach accesses along the North Shore of Oahu from Sunday night. The safest place to be is away from coastal areas.

The National Weather Service reports that swell will build early Monday and continue into Tuesday and Wednesday with open ocean swell heights exceeding 22 feet. This will translate to wave heights of 30 feet or higher at North Shore surf spots.

High surf in combination with high tides will produce dangerous battering waves that will pound the coastline, cause high run-up, and jeopardize beachfront properties.

The Final Day of the O'Neill World Cup

Joel Parkinson took home the win today at the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing at the Vans Triple Crown. Sunset was pumping for the finals with waves up to 20 feet. Sunny Garcia started off the heat with a super-long barrel giving him a score of 9.47. Near the end, Parko took the lead with a 6.17 point wave and won the event. Today might have been the most crowded day we've seen at the Triple Crown, a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Sunset Beach to watch the finals. Now Sunny Garcia is heading into the Pipeline Masters in second place in the Vans Triple Crown and looking to take over Parko with a great contest in what looks to be big waves. Parko's second jewel victory doesn't put him any closer to an ASP win, as it will be a duel between him and Mick. We also crowned the 2009 Noseguard Rookie of the Triple Crown: Brazilian Alejo Muniz took it with honors. Next event: The Billabong Pipeline Masters!
